DXM
Dextromethorphan (also
known as Dex, DXM, Robo, Skittles, Tussin, Triple C) is
a dissociative anesthetic drug found in many
over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medications.
Maximum-strength or extra-strength cough syrups that
contain DXM have higher potential for abuse by
adolescents and young people. Although recommended doses
of DXM relieve coughing, much higher doses can produce
euphoria, hallucinatory effects and a sense of
dissociation similar to that produced by PCP or
ketamine. Individuals who become addicted to the drug
may develop tolerance to the drug and may require 1000mg
or more to get the desired effect.
